The Employment Rights Act 1996 provides that most employers should provide their employees with a written statement of the terms and conditions of their employment. Other important new regulations have been introduced by legislation including ; The National Minimum Wage Act 1998, The Welfare Reforms and Pensions Act 1999, The Employment Relations Act 1999 and The Part Time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000. These regulations impact on all businesses employing staff, in the UK. Many small businesses are not aware these regulations and the impact on them of non compliance. It is important for any business employing people to provide staff with contracts of employment and to follow appropriate procedures in dealing with disciplinary matters and staff grievances.
